Flooded Basement Cleanup

Have you recently experienced a basement flood and are wondering what to do next? At Kidd’s Restoration, we are your trusted, local water damage restoration experts.

Basement floods can happen in an instant with no warning and are usually linked to improper exterior drainage systems, heavy rain, or even a malfunctioning sump pump. Many unfinished basements, will have drains throughout the structure to drain any water that may enter the home and prevent flooding. Some homeowners will also utilize the use of sump pumps to pump any excess water out and away from the property, however, if the sump pump malfunctions a flood may occur in the basement.

What To Do If You Discover A Flooded Basement

Stop The Water

Prior to this step, avoid the flood and turn off the electricity to avoid electrocution or electrical damages throughout the home. Depending on how the water is entering the basement will depend on how the method used to stop the flow of water.

  • Sewage Backup – If your flooded basement is the result of a sewage backup, you should stop using facets and do not use or flush the toilets. If living in city limits, call the sewage manager and report the issue, however, if your home uses a septic system, you must call your local septic company and have the tank pumped to end the flow of water.
  • Burst Pipes – If you have a burst or leaking pipe that is causing a basement flood, you should turn off the water.
  • Groundwater – if groundwater is seeping into the home the only solution is to remove the water, then consider waterproofing the basement and foundation of the home.

Record The Damages

For homeowner’s insurance claims, you should record all the images using a phone or camera, and save the images in multiple places to ensure they will not be lost.

What Items Can Be Saved In A Basement Flood

If properly restored and cleaned, the following common items found in basements can be saved and avoid replacement. Items such as computers or other electronics should be inspected by a professional to determine if salvageable.

  • Flooring & Carpet – If the floors and carpet have experienced minimal damages and exposure to the flood, they should be salvageable. The carpets and flooring should be professionally dried, cleaned, and deodorized.
  • Furniture – Affected furniture should be cleaned and then treated with an antimicrobial. After these steps have been completed the furniture should dry outside (depending on the weather), or seek professional steam cleaning services.
  • Clothing – All clothing should be washed with hot water and disinfecting detergent. If the clothes of other textiles will not be damaged by bleach, we suggest adding bleach to ensure all contaminants are eliminated.
